Si hay algo que me ha dado respeto desde niño han sido los muertos y todo lo que los acompaña: cementerios, tanatorios, coches fúnebres, etc. George A. Romero y sus amigos lo tenían claro y reunieron sus ahorros para conseguir sacar adelante este proyecto que consistía en darle movilidad a los difuntos y que fueran caminando hacia nosotros lentamente. Una idea sencilla pero que creó el efecto que se consiguió  y nadie esperaba. Si le sumamos a todo ello que los propios muertos comieran carne para alimentarse el resultado es terrorífico.

Esta película consiguió que el día de todos los santos nos costara  más visitar los cementerios, y es inevitable que no acabaras imaginando a alguien saliendo de su tumba. Desde que descubrí este clásico, cuando visito a mis seres queridos, tengo un plan de fuga por si acaso se lía. Es decir, mentalmente, busco la salida más cercana. Parece una locura pero es así. Desde que vi La noche de los muertos vivientes (1968) a los 15 años y hasta el  día de hoy lo sigo haciendo. Y si viera a alguien acercarse a mí para preguntarme algo al atardecer en un sitio de estos mantendría mis distancias.

Tengo claro que ver pelis de terror también es una experiencia. La noche de su visionado era Halloween, un compañero y yo abandonamos una fiesta para ir a verla ya que la daban en televisión. Terminamos maravillados, pero para un servidor la noche todavía no se había terminado, quedaba el regreso a casa. Un hogar dulce hogar cuya ubicación se encontraba fuera del pueblo en medio del campo, siempre había sido así, pero especialmente esa noche se me hizo muy cuesta arriba. Como cualquier adolescente de la época tenía un ciclomotor heredado de  hermanos mayores, alumbraba lo justo. Pues bien, ese trayecto de 7 minutos fue, hasta hoy, uno de los trayectos más largo de mi vida.  Adentrarse en la oscuridad solo con la luz tenue del vehículo fue toda una experiencia terrorífica. Lo que han cambiado las noches  a partir de ahí. Pero esa experiencia la recuerdo como algo alucinante, la vida cambia con el cine y si es de terror mola más.

No paraba de preguntarme cómo esa película en blanco y negro y de bajo presupuesto la tenía clavada en mi cabeza. Sería por las escenas de agobio que consigue captar, los primeros planos comiendo carne cruda y la niña ‘jalándose a su padre’ en el sentido literal. Fue el comienzo de la era Zombie (aunque el propio director nunca nombrara esa palabra). Es por eso que este film se merece toda mi admiración y respeto.

Una vez más el cine de terror no se vende a los grandes presupuestos. El terror auténtico es mejor cuando la historia es más simple. George A. Romero de ascendencia gallega, obtuvo parte de su presupuesto de unas tías afincadas en tierras de meigas. Concebida como una comedia en sus inicios, fue, con gran acierto, al final una de las operas primas de la cultura del cine de terror. Un fallo en el registro de los derechos de autor, ha hecho que este icono del cine esté libre y pueda ser utilizado en cualquier ciclo del tema sin tener que pagar absolutamente nada, una pena para sus productores y una enorme alegría para todos los que amamos el género.
